Great British Bake Off: Shirts, Stroopwafels & Show Stoppers

Last night, The Great British Bake Off returned to our screens with one of the most anxiety-ridden challenges of all. It was caramel week.

The bakers were nervous from the beginning with Tom developing what he called a "stress sheen" of sweat across his brow.

Tom GBBO
Caramel Week was a stressful event

The delicious but fickle caramel was used to make eighteen identical millionaire shortbreads, some Dutch Stroopwoffles and a show stopping cake.

What did they bake?

  • Julia made Pecan Salted Caramel Millionair Shortbread
  • James made 'Windy City' Millionaire Shortbread with Gold Leaf
  • Seven made Orange Macademia Nut Millionaire Shortbread
  • Sophie made Jaffa Millionaire Shortbread
  • Stacey made Rum Salted Caramel Millionaire Shortbread
  • Yan made 'Lil Red's Ginger Nuts' Millionaire Shortbread
  • Kate made Salted Bay Caramel Millionaire Shortbread
  • Liam made Salted Peanut Butter Millionaire Shortbread

Liam's Tetris inspired peanut butter short bread earned him the famous Paul Hollywood handshake and people were shook.

"Never underestimate the power of a handshake. #CaramelWeek #GBBO"

"Imagine getting a congratulatory handshake from PAUL HOLLYWOOD#GBBO"

"@LiamcBakes GOT A HANDSHAKE TODAY I'M SO HAPPY FOR HIM!!!!!!!!!! #GBBO"

Next up was the technical challenge of making Dutch Stroopwafels. People were absolutely delighted that the GBBO food history segment history lesson returned as Noel explained the origins of the tasty treat.

"Very happy to see that the little history lessons are back on #GBBO  tonight. Waffle history should totally be added to the curriculum!"

However, they were less impressed with Prue Leith's recipe as each baker failed to impress.

"I reckon Prue should have then made the caramel to make sure it was correct seeing as no one got it right! #caramelweek #wafflegate #GBBO"

"Maybe it was Prue's recipe that caused everyone to have grainy waffles? Just a thought #GBBO"

What were the show stoppers?

  • Liam made a White Layered Ginger Caramel Cake
  • James made a Nutty Caramel Cake
  • Kate made a Sticky Toffee Apple Caramel Cake
  • Tom made a Hummingbird Cake
  • Yan made an Animals of the Rainforest Caramel Cake
  • Sophie made a Bird's Nest Caramel Cake
  • Stacey made a Chocolate and Coffee Caramel Cake

Who was the Star Baker?
Kate's Sticky Toffee Apple Caramel Cake earned her the award of Star Baker. Prue even asked her for the recipe!

Who went home?
Tom's under cooked Hummingbird Cake left him wanting and sadly he was sent home.

The real star of the show?
People were obsessed with Noel's ice cream shirt. The Lazy Oaf Shirt in 'Eat Your Cake' print is from ASOS but is currently out of stock.

Noel GBBO
The dessert shirt went down a storm

"If anyone can find me somewhere I can buy Noel's ice cream shirt from #gbbo I would love you forever"

"I want Noel's ice cream shirt so badly! #GBBO"

"Can I have a shirt like Noel's please?! #GBBO"

"If someone, anyone can send me Noel’s Shirt Thanks now Twitter #GBBO"
