With his latest TV series, Neven Maguire brings it all back home with a show that champions local produce and producers. Donal O’Donoghue talks to the Cavan chef about Irish Food Trails, his work ethic and the impact of Brexit.
On staying humble and keeping a strong work ethic he says "My first ever stand-alone TV show was Moveable Feast but I never ever take it for granted”.
“If I could encourage anyone into this job it would be great because it’s a fabulous career and we have a huge shortage of chefs in Ireland,” he says. “There is never a day that I go into my kitchen that I regret.”
On the effects of Brexit, Neven says: “It’s not impacting on my business at the moment and I’m not sure if the experts even know what will happen”.
“We can’t go back to border checkpoints and I believe it will be all OK. We have 70 staff employed in Blacklion now, but no one really knows and nobody has a crystal ball. We can only hope they make the right decision.
We have come a long way since the Troubles. The restaurant was closed from 1976 to 1989 and we don’t want to go back there.”
