For many years some of the most famous landmarks in the world have gone green for St Patrick’s Day and this year many more iconic locations will join in the celebrations, according to Tourism Ireland.
Since the recession really bedded down in 2009, there has been an increase in the number of cities and countries going-green thanks to the focus on encouraging the 70-million strong diaspora to boost Irish tourism.
Joining the party this year are Rome’s Colosseum, the Sacré-Coeur in Paris, the Leaning Tower of Pisa (as pictured), the 52-story Building 7 at the World Trade Centre at Ground Zero in New York, the light rail system in Addis Ababa, Turbo the Goat in Toronto and the famous Big Wheel on Place de la Concorde in Paris.
Roue de Paris, the French capital's big wheel, City Hall in Tel Aviv, and the Boston Red Sox stadium will also go green for the first time.
Speaking about the going green campaign, Niall Gibbons, chief executive of Tourism Ireland, said: "The eagerness of cities and countries everywhere to take part underlines the strength of the deep connection that people all over the world feel to Ireland.
"More than 70 million people around the world claim links to the island of Ireland and St Patrick's Day is a truly unique opportunity to reconnect them with their heritage."
