The idea was born over four years ago and the way it works is that people are encouraged to spend an extra €5 in their local stores each Friday in order to boost local economies.

With Christmas only around the corner, Festive Fiver Friday has been launched and will take place this Friday, December 4 – all the details on how to get involved as a business or customer are below.

The Radio 1 presenter said:“The idea is simple, local retailers get together to offer fiver Friday specials on December 4 , Liveline promotes it and encourages shoppers to spend an extra fiver in a festive atmosphere.”

Speaking to RTÉ LifeStyle, Joe added:Fiver Friday is Black Friday without the greed, primarily small Irish companies from chemists to butchers get involved.

“It’s all go.” Check out the details on how to get involved.

2015 has been a hectic year for Joe between his day-job on RTÉ Radio 1 and all of his TV and print work : “Between Liveline, Spirit Level (TV Show), Call Back (on TV) and releasing the book (Children of the Rising) it’s been a hectic year, but great.”

For fans of Duffy’s Radio 1 show, (and looking at the JNLR figures, there are many, see below) there has been a lot of talk about one of those TV shows in particular, Call Back: “There’s been a great reaction, great ratings, with everyone wondering why it took so long [in fact].

“I have submitted more ideas for a second series to Adrian Lynch [the head of RTÉ One Television] who took up the idea that I have been hawking around RTÉ for years!

“The Call Back TV show has been great, but hard work, hopefully it will be back, it runs until December 22.”

As for Duffy’s other recent TV show, he said: “I did six one-hour Spirit Levels every Sunday lunchtime in a completely new format; I hope if it comes back we get a better slot.”

As for Duffy’s Radio show: “The Liveline programme is still rocking, still the number one radio programme in the country based on quarter hour figures.

“[There are] great stories [on the show] which recently include[d] reuniting two sisters - originally from India  - after 44 years. [It was] really moving.”

As for Joe’s Christmas plans: “Christmas Eve morning from 9am to 11am [I’ll be] in Grafton Street with Brendan O’Carroll and a host of elves.

“Then [I’m] doing a legacies special on Monday December 29 on RTÉ Radio 1 from 9am to 11am”.

And that’s not all: “Because of the surprise success of the book - described in a number of reviews as the best new book on the Easter Rising, which also won non-fiction book of the year at Irish book awards*, I need to sit down over Christmas to see what I can fit in from the hundreds of invitations to speak at from various 1916 events in schools and festivals [around the country].

“*You can still vote for the overall award at irishbookawards.ie [here]”

Does exactly what it says on the tin

So aside from an award-winning, rating-topping RTÉ Radio 1 programme, two RTÉ TV shows and an award-winning book, a busy Christmas schedule, he concludes, as only Joe can: "Apart from that NO PRESSURE!!"

*Voting closes at midnight December 17 and the Book of the Year will be announced on December 18, 2015.
