Obituary star Siobhán Cullen on playing Elvira: "Her clothes are quite iconic"

Actress Siobhán Cullen on graveyards, life in London and finding her character's style with the help of costume designer Suzanne Keogh and Jenny Nolan.

In RTÉ's dark comedy, Obituary, Elvira (Siobhán Cullen) is a small-town obituary writer turned murderer who is struggling with the death of her beloved father. Unfortunately, she hasn't a second to grieve as her hands are full of problems.

First up is the chaotic new boss Vivienne (Máiréad Tyers), who is trying to destroy her relationship by putting Emerson (Ronan Raftery) and Elvira at odds over a new promotion.

Then there’s her vengeful former boss, Hughie (David Ganley), currently making big plans to secure his release from prison and expose Elvira’s crimes. And then there’s another potential killer in town, which has put her in the crosshairs of the investigation by Detective Rose (Noni Stapleton).

With such an exciting second season set to air on RTÉ One this Tuesday at 22:15, actress Siobhán Cullen joined RTÉ Radio 1 to discuss amateur drama, her life in London, and how the costume designers of Obituary contributed to her character.

"It's such a useful artistic contribution," she said of the wardrobe. "We have amazing costume designers, Suzanne Keogh and Jenny Nolan, and they are just so talented."

Nicknamed the 'prim reaper', Elvira is often spotted wearing vintage shirts, sensible knits, and practical outerwear for Ireland's dreary weather. Of course, the perfectly put-together pieces are a stark contrast to her true self.

"For me, walking into my very first fitting with Suzanne was like the final jigsaw piece falling into place," she adds.

"When I saw the rails of costumes, I just had that thought of, that's who Elvira is. Especially for Elvira - her silhouette and her clothes are quite iconic and unique."

As well as grounding her in her own character, Cullen says that clothes play a part in learning about the roles of those around her.

"Visually, seeing her set up against someone like Vivienne - her style is completely different - and I think, as a storytelling device, I think it's very helpful."
