Breaking down beauty boundaries is always something that piques my interest, so when I was offered the chance to catch up with Olympic Diving Champion Tom Daley, the first ever global male ambassador for Rimmel London, I jumped at it.
Aside from being one of the world's most recognised athletes, Tom is beloved for his philanthropic work, his advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, and for raising awareness of mental health issues within the sporting world - not to mention his love of knitting.
Today, though, I wanted to chat all things beauty.
Tom, congratulations on your new role with Rimmel London! Has makeup played a part in your life before now?
So, for me, makeup has always been something that I had at photoshoots or if I was going on TV or making an appearance or that kind of thing, and it’s something that lots of males are wearing on TV, but are just not talking about. That’s what I think is so amazing about this campaign and being the first male ambassador is making it accessible for everyone. This isn’t a male product, everyone can wear it, it’s for everyone.
Is makeup part of your daily life?
It doesn't form a part of my every single day routine, it’s only when I go out for special occasions and I like to do it quite light and natural. For me it’s about giving that little bit of touch up every now and then if I’m looking tired and if I want to feel extra fine and nice.
How would you describe your current makeup and beauty routine?
For me, I like to keep it simple. Keeping it simple means it’s more attainable and I’m more likely to do it every day. So that means I make sure I wash my face, apply Vitamin C serum, SPF and if I’m out and about and I want to look my best and give myself more confidence, I will apply some Match Perfect foundation.
What do you think we need to do more or less of in the world of beauty?
I think as the world of beauty evolves we need to make sure it’s more inclusive and that everyone can see themselves in the world of beauty, that way they are more likely to get involved in that world. I think that’s just one thing that’s really exciting about what Rimmel is doing.
Do you feel a certain amount of pressure to look a certain way after all the success you’ve had?
If you had of asked me that about 10 years ago I would have said yes, but as I’ve gotten older I care less and less about what people think of me. I just want to go and do my thing, being true to myself, wear what I want, feel how I feel and be truly unapologetically me.
What are you top three desert island beauty products?
I’m definitely going to say some sunscreen, Match Perfect in case there’s a desert island animal I want to impress! I would say some body lotion like aloe vera as I’m going to get burnt if I’m going on a desert island!
Who is your all time fave beauty and skincare icon?
I have to say my mum. I love that she’s a natural beauty and then she likes to glam herself up whenever she goes out to feel special and she doesn’t do the same look every time which I think is really nice.
When do you feel at your absolute and when do you feel at your worst?
Oooh, honestly for me there’s something that’s really important about having exercise and movement while making sure you have lots of self care, for me I like to do lots of knitting. Then making sure that you get lots of rest and recovery as that’s really important too.
Obviously you are extremely fit, do you mix up your workouts now or do you keep it consistent with your routine?
I like to mix it up at the moment, because I haven’t been diving for the past year I like to do bits and bobs and enjoy myself, doing whatever I feel like doing on that day. Whether it’s going for a run, doing a group workout class, just going to the gym, there’s lot of variety in what I do.
