Arguably the biggest date on the fashion calendar, the Met Gala is an annual extravaganza that sees the world's most famous faces dare to display their most extravagant looks under the watchful eye of Vogue editor and event chair, Anna Wintour.

From Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination to Camp: Notes On Fashion, the star-studded fundraiser sees actors, singers, musicians and models work the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, providing show-stopping looks as well as raising funds for The Costume Institute.

When is the Met Gala 2022?
Cancelled in 2020 and delayed from its usual date in 2021, this year's event will return to its rightful slot on the first Monday in May (May 2) with a familiar theme.

What is the Met Gala 2022 theme?
As per tradition, the event's theme is made to match the upcoming exhibition taking place at the Metropolitan Museum.

Part One, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, which is currently taking place in the Anna Wintour Costume Center, celebrated The Costume Institute’s 75th anniversary and established a modern vocabulary of fashion.

Part Two, In America: An Anthology of Fashion - which is set to open in the American Wing period rooms on May 5, 2022 - will present "sartorial narratives that relate to the complex and layered histories of those rooms".

Celebrities and designers set out to stand out on the red carpet, working hard to find their own twist on the shared theme. September's event saw Kim Kardashian break the internet in head to toe Balenciaga, while Billie Eilish transformed into an Old Hollywood starlet.

According to Vogue, the take on this year's event will be "gilded glamour." Organisers will ask attendees to "embody the grandeur—and perhaps the dichotomy—of Gilded Age New York".

Who will host the Met Gala 2022?
Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Lin-Manuel Miranda will serve as the events co-chairs, while designer Tom Ford, Instagram's Adam Mosseri, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour will continue as honorary co-chairs.

Who will attend the 2022 Met Gala?
According to Vogue, the exclusive event hosts around 600 attendees, although a smaller number attended the 2021 Met Gala due to COVID-19.

The guest list is top secret and fans count down the seconds to see who will walk the red carpet.

In saying that, the Met steps are always graced by the who's who of Hollywood so fans can likely expect to see the world's biggest celebs (Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Rihanna) as well as stars who are making their mark.

How much is a ticket to the Met Gala?
Those who make Wintour's painstakingly-planned guest list don't pay to attend. Those who don't make the cut, however, will likely pay around $30,000 per ticket, with tables costing about $275,000.

What is the 2022 exhibition about?
Opening May 5, 2022, Part Two of the exhibition is a collaboration between The Costume Institute and the American Wing.

It is the final installment of The Costume Institute's trilogy of period-room shows, which began with Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century (2004) in the French Period Rooms and was followed by AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion (2006) in the English Period Rooms.

Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, says that the presentation will focus on the evolution of American fashion.

"American fashion has traditionally been described through the language of sportswear and ready-to-wear, emphasizing principles of simplicity, practicality, functionality, and egalitarianism.

"Generally denied the emotional rhetoric applied to European fashion, American fashion has evolved a vernacular that tends to sit in direct opposition to that of the haute couture. Part One of In America addresses this linguistic imbalance by presenting a revised vocabulary of American fashion based on its expressive qualities.

"Part Two will further investigate the evolving language of American fashion through a series of collaborations with American film directors who will visualize the unfinished stories inherent in The Met's period rooms."

According to The Costume Institute, the exhibition will feature men’s and women’s dress dating from the 18th century to the present in vignettes installed in select period rooms.

The interiors present a survey of more than 300 years of American domestic life and tell a variety of stories—from the personal to the political, the stylistic to the cultural, and the aesthetic to the ideological.

The exhibition will reflect on these narratives through a series of three-dimensional cinematic "freeze frames" produced in collaboration with notable American film directors. These mise-en-scènes will explore the role of dress in shaping American identity and address the complex and layered histories of the rooms.

Part One and Two of the exhibitions will close on September 5, 2022.
