Her win may have been expected, but Lady Gaga's simple ensemble sure wasn't.
The Oscar winner went for a decidedly more understated look for last night's awards ceremony, arriving in a sleek black Alexander McQueen gown with a rounded neckline, full flounced skirt and structured hips that called to mind her Bad Romance days.

Paired with matching leather gloves, she was at once pure old Hollywood class and incredibly fresh, borderline-punk modern. Very Gaga.

Her deeply tanned skin was offset by a swirl of platinum blond hair, swept up onto her head and kept in romantic waves, while her makeup was fresh, with powdery blue eyeshadow and pink glossy lips.

While many fashion fanatics were expecting a gown to rival Billy Porter's, Gaga's pared-back outfit allowed for two glittering and show-stopping accessories to shine: her Oscar for Best Song for 'Shallow' from A Star Is Born and a diamond necklace so regal and audacious it has a name.

The extraordinary yellow diamond, known as the Tiffany Yellow Diamond, also has a true Hollywood legacy, as the 128.54-carat stone was used in promotional images for Breakfast at Tiffany's, the iconic 1961 film that made Audrey Hepburn a superstar.

Gaga is a Tiffany spokesperson, which might explain how she got her hands on the incredibly revered jewel, and it was an ideal centre piece for her Oscars look, at once establishing her as an icon for our age and a superstar of the likes of Hepburn, Monroe, and Bacall.

In a recent Instagram post, Tiffany's said the diamond was "priceless" and was released from the vault specifically for Lady Gaga, marking the first time in history that the legendary Tiffany Diamond has graced an awards show red carpet.
Here for it.
