Ireland at the Movies: Costume in Irish Cinema 1987-2015, in collaboration with Irish Design 2015, features some real gems that have been hidden away in private collections of designers and actors.
Award-winning costume designer Eimer Ní Mhaoldomnaigh and costume historian Veerle Dehaene have curated the exhibition which features costumes on view to the public for the first time ever.
There's a chance to see behind-the-scenes photographs of Julia Roberts in Michael Collins and to examine unforgettable outfits from films such as Breakfast on Pluto, Jimmy’s Hall and Calvary.
Brendan Gleeson, whose Calvary cossack is on display, said: "Good costume design, like everything else in film-making, demands individual creativity in the service of the narrative and the film as a whole.”
How did the exhibition come about? "It's something I've wanted to do for a long time," Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh told RTÉ LifeStyle.
"There is a real wealth of talent in Ireland and I wanted to higlight some of the talent behind the camera, but also to try to explain the process of costume design and the many different elements envolved.
"The exhibition has clothes, movies and actors all linked in, I think it has something for everyone!"
As to the worldwide view of Irish costume design, Eimer said: "It's really strong. Joan Bergin has won numerous Emmys and Consolata Boyle has an Oscar nomination. When I meet directors who are not Irish, they know my work.
"The film business is a huge machine, but at the same time, we are all inter connected and know who's good and who's doing what. The nature of film means travelling, so being Irish is no different to being from London or the states."
The designer is enjoying the time out to focus on this project for The Little Museum of Dublin: "I took the Summer off to get this exhibition sorted with my colleague, Veerle Dehaene. Also, it's the first time in about 15 years that I haven't been working on a film during the Summer, so I'm enjoying that!"
However she added that now that the exhibition has opened: "I'm available, so I need to start looking at new projects very soon!"
