From the science of doping to the threat of alien species in our waters, there's a lot to learn on the second day of Science Week.

1. GAA science at Aurivo Theatre, IT Sligo
7pm to 8:45pm

Two renowned sport scientists, Prof Cathy McHugh and Dr Edwenia O'Malley, discuss the science of GAA and the current testing methods for growth hormone abuse in elite sport. Prof McHugh spent three years working for the World Anti-doping Agency and the International Olympic Committee, and now works at both NUIG and Sligo University Hospital. Admission is free and the talk is suitable for the general public.

2. MakerDojo at Tyndall National Institute, Cork
9am to 7pm

This family-friendly event at Tyndall will see you learn about science, engineering and technology through fun electronics and musical laser workshops. Ever wanted to know how some cars can run on water? What about how 3D printing might change our lives? Researchers from the renowned Cork research institute will fill you in.

3. Alien sea species talk at Gate Lodge, Castleblayney, Monaghan
7pm

Exotic-sounding invasive species are both a real threat to our waters and to Ireland's fishing industry. Have you heard of the Japanese Knotweed? What about the Himalayan Balsam? Asian clams? These non-native species pose threats to Ireland's valuable water resources. In this fascinating talk at Gate Lodge in Castleblayney, find out how the anglers of the close-by Lough Muckno have protected their waters. This free talk is suitable for adults, but you should pre-book.
