This Red Devil is also a bit of a saint!

Usually if you are a Premier League superstar you only get the support of your own fans, but one young man has a whole country behind him.

Home School Hub looked at the amazing work of Manchester United's Marcus Rashford. Thanks to his campaigning millions of young children have had a proper meal over the past year.

Have a look at the full lesson above and read more about his work here!

Since March 2020 Marcus has worked with the UK charity FareShare to help make a massive difference to the lives of boys and girls all over the UK who don't have enough food to eat.

About Marcus' support of FareShare

  • Marcus partnered with FareShare in March 2020 at the start of the lockdown when schools were closed
  • He has made several significant donations and that combined with the donations from his fans and followers will enable FareShare to provide more than 9.5 million additional meals to vulnerable children and families
  • He has also raised awareness of child hunger, helping raise it to the top of the news agenda
  • To recognise his incredible campaigning and support of FareShare, earlier this year FareShare Greater Manchester named its new warehouse – currently undergoing refurbishment – Melanie Maynard, in honour of his mum and all other parents and carers doing their best to raise child

FareShare also works with Irish charity FoodCloud. The technology the Irish charity has developed enables Tesco and Waitrose to inform local FareShare charities of surplus food which is available for collection in the UK.

Working with FareShare, this technology was used to distribute an incredible 23 million meals. The charities that receive this food - from breakfast clubs, to homeless hostels to family support services - are places that provide life changing support.

Here in Ireland, FoodCloud works with supermarkets and big food companies to make sure that if they have any extra food that cannot be sold on, they can make sure it gets up people who can use it in time. They work with over 650 charities who are helping over 180,000 people every week.

Last year FoodCloud were able to ensure that over SEVEN MILLION meals went to people and not in the bin thanks to an app that connects the supermarket with the charity directly.

The store uploads details of the food available for donation using an app or in-store scanner. A local charity is then notified about the food available and can confirm if they are available to collect the donation from their local store.

FoodCloud talk about food insecurity, what that is, that people have  to make a choice on whether they can pay their electricity bill or whether they can afford the food they need to feed their families.

It can be a very difficult choice for people to make, and it is people like Marcus who benefited from organisations like FareShare and FoodCloud when he was growing up.
