It's World Book Day’s birthday! World Book Day celebrates its 25th birthday today, 3 March 2022, and everyone is invited to join the party.
Thanks to out friends at Children's Books Ireland we have some great ways that you can celebrate!
The charity’s biggest campaign to date will focus on helping children discover a love for reading through a huge range of fun reading activities, while providing more opportunities than ever to exchange their token and choose a €1.50 book for free.
This year, there are two Irish published titles for audiences to choose from, alongside the full range of €1.50 books. The Irish-published titles are John Farrelly’s Deadly! Irish History: Fun with the Celts and the Vikings! from The O’Brien Press and Cluasa Capaill ar an Rí, written by Bridget Bhreathnach and illustrated by Shona Shirley Macdonald. Cluasa Capaill ar an Rí is published by Futa Fata in partnership with Foras na Gaeilge.
The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading. This may sound like a very simple idea, but unfortunately, many children do not have access to books in their homes. To help make sure that everyone can join in the fun of World Book Day, the charity has partnered with Children’s Books Ireland and An Post to gift 14,000 books directly to children who might not be able to access the tokens.
With the help of An Post, thousands of children and families experiencing homelessness, living in direct provision, children in hospitals, healthcare situations and Traveller communities will receive a book of their own for World Book Day.
These books are being delivered to fifty locations across Ireland in partnership with charities including St. Vincent de Paul, Barnardos, the Peter McVerry Trust and Children in Hospital Ireland.
