Mothertongues: Have you ever heard of Tagalog?

Today's Mothertongues is all about Tagalog. Tagolog is the second most spoken language in the Philippines with about 14 million speaking it there on a daily basis. But it’s also spoken by another 25 million people as a second language.

The Philippines is an archipelago, the name for a string of islands. And as a nation it’s made up of over 7000 of them! It’s seated between the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea.

Cara is 12 and in fifth class at St Mary’s Primary School in Dublin and she and her family speak a mix of Tagolog and English at home. Here she chats with her mum about her hobbies, the things she loves and shares a huge amount of Tagalog too!

Cara is a movie lover who is mad about Tom Holland and Spiderman but weirdly hates spiders!

Here are some useful phrases for you to practice.

· Hello is Musta

· What is your name? - Anong pangalan mo?

· Nice to meet you = Kinagagalak kong makilala ka.

· Thank you is Salamat

Today's episode was recorded with the assistance of Kate McCaughey, the Home School Liaison at St Mary’s. Thanks Kate!
