Steve Carell is back as criminal mastermind turned doting family man Gru for a fourth whirl on this durable franchise - and of course he's got his in no way annoying yellow tic tac Minions with him.

Now happily ensconced in Day-Glo suburbia with his family, spy wife and homemaker Lucy (Kristen Wiig), their daughters and new arrival Gru Junior, their world is turned upside down by a blast from the past in the form of Gru's former schoolmate Maxime Le Mal.

Voiced by a typically maniacal Will Ferrell, he’s busted outta chokey and is out for revenge after Gru upstaged him at their 9th Grade talent contest years earlier. Even in cartoon form, Ferrell rips it up as a kind of slightly less unhinged Mugato, the manchild fashion boss he played in the Zoolander movies, as he marshals an army of cockroaches to do his bidding.

It's another stylish and occasionally ingenious addition to the series. Carell’s Gru still sounds like something from a Compare the Market ad and director, voice actor and animator Pierre Coffin still impresses doing the garbled Esperanto of the Minions.

However, the next part in this franchise should really go to Joey King, who has a touch of Violet Elizabeth Bott in her role as small town wannabe evil mastermind Poppy Prescott.
