On paper, Morgan sounds like it could be the next cult sci-fi movie; there's an artificially intelligent creation 'Morgan' (Taylor-Joy) with human emotions going rogue, and a specialist (Mara) sent in to clean up the mess who butts heads with the scientists that created her, it sounds like it has all of the raw ingredients required. But sadly, the end product doesn't reflect this at all.

It could've, and should've, been a high drama thriller, but even when it gets going and the action starts rolling in, there is nothing of substance to keep you involved. We've seen it all before, and we've seen it done better.

The problems begin with Kate Mara; she doesn't have the screen presence to carry this film. She was brilliant in House of Cards, but there's a big difference between being a great supporting character and a leading woman in a studio thriller. She's not there yet. Her wooden performance also lead me to guess the twist after just a few minutes. And it's not even a good twist.

When you find yourself focused more on the fact that Mara's character never ditches her high heels, even when running around a forest, it's a bad sign.

One big positive though was an outstanding scene with Paul Giamatti and rising star Anya Taylor-Joy. If the tension and emotion of this scene could've been maintained for the duration, it would've been a very different film.

Taylor-Joy will surely go on to bigger and better things, she's nowhere near Alicia Vikander in Ex Machina-level, but she's definitely one to watch.

The potential of Morgan's premise is never reached; it should have been a claustrophobic psychological thriller, but its many flaws have left it an un-enthralling mess that should've had its plug pulled before release.
