New documentary on Irish punk band set for cinemas

A documentary about late eighties Irish punk act The Panic Merchants will get a cinema release this May following acclaim at screenings on the film festival circuit.

Once We Were Punks follows the rise and fall and rise again of the Co Cavan act, who formed in the 1980s, disbanded and the reunited 25 years later.

The documentary directed by Frank Shouldice (The Man Who Wanted To Fly) was previously screened at the Galway Film Festival and at Dublin's IFI Documentary Festival and will now have its release from 15 May in selected Irish cinemas.

The synopsis for the film reads, "1980's Bailieboro, Co Cavan. Dreaming big, four school mates Justin, David, Noel and Paddy, form a punk band setting their sights on world domination.

"They have a blast but the big breakthrough never comes to pass. They call it quits. The dream is over. Until they meet up at a funeral 25 years later and to their own surprise, pick up where they left off.

"Separated by oceans for the past three decades those barnstorming memories might tenuously connect four school pals across three continents.

"Except the past can mean more than distance, especially when ex-punks revive young dreams in middle age".
