Tributes have been paid from across Hollywood following the death of Oscar-winning actor Robert Duvall at the age of 95.
Duvall died peacefully at his home in Middleburg, Virginia on Sunday (15 February), according to his publicist and a statement shared on his official Facebook page by his wife, Luciana Duvall.
In her post, Luciana Duvall described him as her "beloved husband" and "one of the greatest actors of our time", saying he died surrounded by "love and comfort".
Francis Ford Coppola, who directed Duvall in The Godfather films as well as Apocalypse Now and The Conversation, said his death was "a blow" and described him as "a great actor", sharing a clip of Duvall's performance as Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now.
Coppola said the actor had been an "essential part" of his American Zoetrope production company and described him as "a great actor".
Robert De Niro, who co-starred with Duvall in The Godfather Part II and True Confessions, said in a statement: "God bless Bobby. I hope I can live till I'm 95. May he Rest in Peace."
Al Pacino starred as Michael Corleone in Coppola's seminal gangster movie and its sequels with Duvall. In statement, Pacino said: "It was an honour to have worked with Robert Duvall.
"He was a born actor as they say, his connection with it, his understanding and his phenomenal gift will always be remembered.
"I will miss him."
Further tributes came from actors who worked with him across his long career. Adam Sandler, who starred with Duvall in Netflix film Hustle, called him "one of the greatest actors we ever had" in a post on Instagram.
He added: "Loved him so much. We all did. So many movies to choose from that were legendary. Watch them when you can. Sending his wife Luciana and all his family and friends our condolences."
The Sopranos actor Michael Imperioli described him as "one of the best ever" and "an actor's actor", while Jamie Lee Curtis hailed him as "the greatest consigliere the screen has ever seen", referencing his role as Tom Hagen.
Duvall's Car co-star Robert Patrick also paid a heartfelt tribute to the actor with a post on Instagram.
He said: "I am gutted. Robert Duvall I will miss you brother. He was the actor I looked up to. His ability to find the truth of a scene was something special.
"Over the years I would call Bobby and we'd talk movies and barbecue. He loved barbecue and I'd always let him know when I was having it in Lockhart, Texas.
"I will miss Bobby. I will always be proud that I got to play his son. Rest in peace my friend."
Viola Davis, who appeared with Duvall in Widows, said she had always been in awe of his portrayals, while Walton Goggins shared an emotional tribute recalling their time on The Apostle.
Jane Seymour also remembered working with him on The Stars Fell on Henrietta, saying he fully inhabited his roles, and Alec Baldwin and Josh Gad were among those who shared messages celebrating his screen work.
Duvall’s career spanned more than six decades, from his film debut as Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird to roles in classics including The Godfather, Apocalypse Now and Lonesome Dove.
He received seven Academy Award nominations and won Best Actor for Tender Mercies.
