Irish director Lee Cronin to be honoured with an Oscar Wilde Award

Irish director Lee Cronin, whose movies include The Hole in the Ground and Evil Dead Rise, will be honoured with an Oscar Wilde Award at this year's event in LA this March.

It was previously announced that actor Domhnall Gleeson and Irish American actress Maura Tierney will be honoured at the awards, which were founded by the US-Ireland Alliance to sponsor and promote a variety of events focusing on Irish arts and culture, and recognize achievements in Irish film, theatre, and other creative pursuits.

Cronin began his career with numerous award-winning short films, before his debut feature The Hole in the Ground premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019 and landed him a Saturn Award nomination for Breakthrough Director.

His second film, Evil Dead Rise, premiered at SXSW in 2023, grossing $150 million for Warner Bros. at the global box office and earning Cronin the Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Best Director.

Cronin lives in Ireland where he runs his production company Wicked/Good, which produced his third feature film, Lee Cronin's The Mummy, due be released worldwide by New Line Cinema on 17 April.

Previous recipients of the award include Pierce Brosnan, Carrie Fisher, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan.

Trina Vargo, president of the US-Ireland Alliance noted, "Lee’s trajectory is impressive. And to have his name precede the title of the film, that’s a rarity for any director."

Oscar Wilde Awards, which is celebrating its twentieth anniversary, tales place at The Ebell of Los Angeles on 12 March.
