The trailer has been released for the upcoming adaptation of the late author John McGahern's final novel, That They May Face the Rising Sun.
The synopsis accompanying the trailer reads: "Capturing a year in the life of a rural, lakeside community in Ireland in the 1970s, That They May Face the Rising Sun tells the story of Joe and Kate Ruttledge, who have returned from London to live and work in a small, close-knit community near where Joe grew up.
"Now deeply embedded in life around the lake, the drama of a year in their lives and those of the memorable characters around them unfolds through the rituals of work, play and the passing seasons."
Directed by Pat Collins (Song of Granite, Silence, John McGahern: A Private World), That They May Face the Rising Sun stars Barry Ward (Jimmy's Hall, Bad Sisters) and Anna Bederke (Soul Kitchen, Sterben) alongside Lalor Roddy (Grabbers, God's Creatures), Seán McGinley (Michael Collins, Braveheart), Ruth McCabe (Philomena, Joy Ride) and first-time actor Phillip Dolan.
That They May Face the Rising Sun was published to acclaim in 2003. Author John McGahern passed away in 2006 at the age of 71.
That They May Face the Rising Sun will be the closing film at next year's Dublin International Film Festival (DIFF), which runs from 22 February to 2 March 2024.
"It's a huge honour for us that the Irish premiere of That They May Face the Rising Sun is the closing film for next year's DIFF," said director Pat Collins. "We have a long association with the festival and have had many special screenings there over the years and are delighted to be showing it here first."
That They May Face the Rising Sun, which is backed by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, will be released in cinemas next year.
