The Irish Christmas gets its close-up in new movie

The trailer for the new Irish documentary So This Is Christmas has been released - and there may not be a dry eye in the house when the film arrives in cinemas next month.

So This Is Christmas is the new film from Ken Wardrop, the director of the acclaimed Making the Grade, Mom & Me and His & Hers.

The synopsis reads: "It's late November and across the country expectations of the impending festive season are growing. Christmas trees are being bought, festive music turned up and presents scrambled for. It's all getting very bright and loud, excessive and expensive.

"So This Is Christmas takes us on a heartening and emotional journey with five ordinary characters as they navigate personal dilemmas triggered by this overwhelming time of year. Amid their everyday lives and struggles, we discover stories of extraordinary resilience and humble bravery.

"The story is brought to life in a creative documentary form, where characters' lives interweave with a colourful tapestry of Christmas scenes. Beyond the façade of tinsel and celebration, the film explores the deeper complexities that emerge when expectations collide with reality. What transpires is an important social commentary, filled with humour yet tinged with tragedy that will leave audiences questioning the true meaning of Christmas."

So This Is Christmas opens in cinemas on Friday 17 November, having received its world premiere at the Cork International Film Festival on Friday 10 November

"I'm immensely proud and grateful to have made this film," said director Wardrop.

"It has been a profoundly special journey thanks to the incredible individuals who shared their stories. Their courage and resilience have been truly inspiring.

"I hope the film will resonate with Irish audiences and anyone grappling with the complex emotions of Christmas, reminding us all of what the festive season is really meant to be about."

So This Is Christmas opens in cinemas on Friday 17 November, having received its world premiere at the Cork International Film Festival on Friday 10 November.
