Pete Waterman

There's a Stock, Aitken and Waterman night on BBC Two, the first live Strictly of the new run, Michael McIntyre's The Wheel and Blankety Blank return, and Ireland face South Africa in the Rugby World Cup . . .

Pick of the Day

Stock Aitken Waterman at the BBC, 8.35pm, BBC Two

This documentary opens up a night of musical fun that should delight pretty much anyone who grew up in the 1980s or likes a catchy pop song.

Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman were the producers who conquered the UK charts in the 1980s, with their instantly recognisable brand of disco-flavoured floor-filling pop hits.

They divided music fans between those who loved their high-energy sound and the singers they transformed into cheesy pop sensations, and others who despised them for turning music-making into a production line.

But there's no denying that they created some true pop classics.

This selection celebrates some of their most memorable hits, from acts including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Rick Astley, Dead or Alive, Donna Summer, Bananarama, and Mel and Kim

Followed at 10.05pm by Kylie Live in the Park.

The pop princess takes to the stage at Radio 2 in the Park in Leicester, her first full concert performance in more than four years. Kylie promises a selection of old classics alongside songs from her album Tension.

Then at 11.15pm there’s Kylie at the BBC, a newly extended programme featuring a selection of archive performances by Kylie Minogue.

It runs from the early days with Stock Aitken Waterman to the dance sounds of the 1990s, the 2000s and beyond, including her collaborations with Robbie Williams, Nick Cave and Jason Donovan.

Don’t Miss

Strictly Come Dancing, 6.15pm, BBC One

Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman are back with the first live show of 2023, opening with a stunning group performance from the professional dancers.

There's no public vote (no biggie for us in Ireland, of course), but judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Shirley Ballas still have their paddles.

Their scores tonight will be carried over to next week, when UK viewers will have their chance to vote for their favourite couple.

New or Returning Shows

Michael McIntyre's The Wheel, 8.35pm, BBC One

The much-loved comedian hosts the Saturday-night game show, as contestants take on a colossal spinning wheel and answer questions in the hope of securing a cash prize.

Celebrities experts offering advice are Clare Balding on Dogs, Darren Harriott on Gaming, Jay Blades on Furniture, Josie Gibson on TV, Mollie King on 00s Music, Richard Madeley on Classic Cars and Tom Allen on Hats.

Blankety Blank, 9.35pm, BBC One

Bradley Walsh hosts the revival of the comedy quiz show, in which a panel of six celebrities fill in the blanks to help contestants win some brilliant prizes.

The panel for this episode comprises Rylan, Emma Willis, Desiree Burch, Sue Perkins, Anita Rani and Iain Stirling.

Black Snow, 9.00pm, BBC Four

Australian crime drama about the investigation into the killing of a high school girl 25 years earlier.

The opening of a time capsule in a Queensland school brings fresh focus on the 25-year-old murder of a local girl.

Episode two follows at 9.50pm.

New to Stream

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Sky Cinema & NOW

Marcel is an adorable one-inch-tall shell who ekes out a colourful existence with his grandmother Connie and their pet lint, Alan.

Once part of a sprawling community of shells, they now live alone as the sole survivors of a mysterious tragedy.

But when a documentary filmmaker discovers them amongst the clutter of his Airbnb, the short film he posts online brings Marcel millions of passionate fans, as well as unprecedented dangers and a new hope at finding his long-lost family.

Saturday Cinema

West Side Story, 3.25pm, BBC Two

Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's magnificent Oscar-winning musical based on Romeo and Juliet, and adapted from the stage show.

This 1961 version stars Natalie Wood (with Marnie Nixon singing her parts), Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno and George Chakiris.

The story focuses on two teenagers from rival New York street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, who fall in love - but it causes already simmering tensions to explode.

Really though, it’s about those great songs and dance sequences. From beginning to end, this is just fantastic.

A Private War, 9.45pm, RTÉ One

Rosamund Pike is really good in this biopic about the eyepatch-wearing war correspondent Marie Colvin, who was driven to the frontline of conflicts across the globe to give voice to the voiceless.

In 2012, she and photographer Paul Conroy cover the conflict in the city of Homs, where they find thousands of Syrian men, women and children caught in the crossfire.

Rugby World Cup

South Africa face Ireland (KO 8.00pm) in Pool C at Stade de France in Paris.

Given South Africa are the holders and Ireland won the Six Nations Grand Slam this year, these two teams went into the competition as two of the sides most likely to go all the way.

Ireland boss Andy Farrell

Jacqui Hurley presents, with analysis from Jamie Heaslip, Jerry Flannery, Simon Zebo and Stephen Ferris.

Before that there's Live Rugby World Cup 2023 (4.15pm, Virgin Media Two) as England play Chile (KO 4.45pm) in a Pool D encounter at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille.

Live UEFA Women's Nations League, 12.30pm, RTÉ2

Streaming on RTÉ Player

It's the international football equivalent of the All-Ireland as Ireland host Northern Ireland (KO 1.00pm) in their opening Group B1 fixture, as the neighbours meet at Aviva Stadium.

The most recent meeting between the sides was in 2018, when Ireland claimed an emphatic 4-0 home win, but Northern Ireland have improved considerably in recent years and a more competitive encounter is anticipated on this occasion.

And it really is an occasion, as the women's team plays at the Aviva for the first time.
