Blur frontman Damon Albarn has said that the UK's decision to quit the EU has been a "disaster" for young British musicians and "a travesty" for his country.

Making a reference to his band’s second album, he added, "Brexit is rubbish."

Albarn (55) told Channel 4 News that Brexit has made "life-changing" tours of Europe extremely difficult for new UK bands because of red tape and new visa requirements since Brexit finally came into force in early 2020.

"That kind of creativity has been very much curtailed for people on this island because it’s expensive now to go over there," he said.

"It’s not straightforward. You have to pay for visas and all that stuff that weren’t necessary. It’s a terrible ... it’s a travesty.

He added, "Brexit was a travesty and people are waking up to that now. Thank goodness. But it was a disaster - spiritually, economically, just rubbish. Brexit is rubbish."

Well-known Europhiles Blur, who released a track called People in Europe as a B-side to their 1994 hit Girls & Boys, took a rueful look at Britishness on their most famous album Parklife.

The band will release The Ballad of Darren, their first album in eight years, this July, and will play a sold-out show at Malahide Castle in Dublin on 24 June.
