The Banshees of Inisherin was the big winner at the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills on Tuesday night, winning Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor for Colin Farrell and Best Screenplay for writer-director Martin McDonagh.

The black comedy, which was filmed on Inis Mór and Achill Island, had led the shortlist with eight nominations.

Both Farrell and McDonagh are previous Golden Globe winners.

Farrell previously won in the same category, Best Actor - Musical or Comedy, in 2009 for his performance in McDonagh's In Bruges. McDonagh also won in 2018 for his screenplay for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

At Tuesday night's ceremony, Farrell was congratulated on his win by his co-star from both films, Brendan Gleeson.

Accepting his award, Farrell thanked the entire cast and crew of the Oscar-tipped film - including co-star Jenny the Donkey.

"Martin McDonagh, I owe you so much, man," Farrell said during his acceptance speech.

He described the London-Irish filmmaker as his "dance partner" who "changed the trajectory of my life forever in ways that I, begrudgingly, will be grateful to you for the rest of my days".

Addressing Gleeson, Farrell continued: "Brendan, I just, I love you so much.

"I love that I get to cohabitate this creative space with you every day. All I did when I came to work every day was aspire to be your equal.

"I'm not saying I even got there, but the aspiration kept me going. And I'll thank you for that for the rest of my days also."

Farrell concluded his speech with a message for "the loves of my life", his sons James and Henry.

"I love you so much," he said to a huge cheer from the audience.

McDonagh paid tribute to Farrell and Gleeson as he accepted his screenplay award.

"The beautiful, nuanced performances just blew me out of the water as usual," he said.

"I love you, as you know, for your brilliance on screen, and I'll try not to leave it another 14 years till I do the next one."

In the television categories, The Patient's Domhnall Gleeson missed out on the Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television award, which went to Black Bird's Paul Walter Hauser.

The Golden Globes became mired in controversy regarding diversity, sexism and ethics after a Los Angeles Times investigation in February 2021, with studios and PR firms subsequently boycotting the submission process and refusing to make A-listers available.

The backlash prompted the organiser of the awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), to admit a raft of new members, overhaul its bylaws and implement changes addressing ethics and inclusion.

Last September, US network NBC said it would resume broadcasting the awards after cancelling its January 2022 airing of the ceremony in the wake of the backlash.

The pre-show and ceremony are on RTÉ2 from 9:05pm tonight.
