Pick of the Day

Strictly Come Dancing, 6.45pm, BBC One

Following on from last night’s opener, Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman host the first live show of the new run of the hugely popular show.

Judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Shirley Ballas assess the routines of the 15 couples, with the scores they award tonight being carried over to next week when viewers will have their chance to vote.

Plus, a special group routine from the professional dancers.

Don’t Miss

Live UEFA Nations League, 7.00pm, RTÉ2

Stephen Kenny’s Green and White Army resume their Nations League campaign as Scotland host Republic of Ireland (Kick-off 7.45pm) at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Ireland produced one of their best performances of the Kenny era so far in the reverse fixture at the Aviva Stadium, when they recorded a 3-0 win.

That was thanks to goals by Alan Browne, Troy Parrott and Michael Obafemi - but Scotland will be expecting to be much more competitive on home territory.

Kylie at the BBC, 9.10pm, BBC Two

Here’s a selection of archive performances by Kylie Minogue, from the early days with Stock, Aitken & Waterman to the dance sounds of the 1990s, the 2000s and beyond, including her collaborations with Robbie Williams, Nick Cave and Jason Donovan.

That’s followed at 10.10pm by Kylie Minogue: Reel Stories, where the singer and actress discusses her career with Dermot O'Leary, who presents some clips of her early appearances on TV.

Looking back with a mixture of pride, curiosity and occasional embarrassment, Kylie relives moments of her life as handpicked by the host.

New or Returning Shows

The Hit List, 6.00pm, BBC One

The series returns with a Strictly Come Dancing special of the music-based quiz show, hosted by Marvin and Rochelle Humes (below).

Joining them and hoping to win big for charity are TV personality Jamie Laing and rugby star Ugo Monye, presenter AJ Odudu and her Strictly partner Kai Widdrington, and Dragons' Den star Sara Davies and Strictly professional Amy Dowden.

Blankety Blank, 9.10pm, BBC One

Bradley Walsh (below) hosts the return of the comedy quiz show, in which a panel of six celebrities fill in the missing blanks to help contestants win some brilliant prizes.

In this first edition, he is joined by Denise Van Outen, Ellie Simmonds, Chris Eubank, Frank Skinner, Vick Hope and Joey Essex.

KaDeWe - Our Time is Now, 9.00pm, BBC Four

The Saturday night subtitled slot heads to Germany tonight, with this drama series about the Kaufhaus des Westens department store and Eldorado nightclub in the 1920s in Berlin.

War veteran Harry Jandorf returns from the trenches to resume his role at his family's store only to find many changes.

The city's population is struggling with the hardships of the new peace, and his ambitious sister demands that she continues her involvement in the business.

In episode two at 9.45pm, having convinced Georg to cook the books, Harry accompanies his father to the bank to try to persuade them to give a substantial loan, despite the poor economic climate.

New to Stream

Georgetown, Sky Cinema & NOW

Christoph Waltz, Vanessa Redgrave, Annette Bening, Corey Hawkins, Laura de Carteret and Dan Lett star in director David Auburn’s crime drama.

An eccentric and smooth-talking social climber who seems to have everyone in Washington, DC, wrapped around his finger is investigated after his wealthy, well-connected and much older wife turns up dead in their home.

Saturday Cinema

Rocketman, 9.30pm, RTÉ One

This Golden Globe-winning biopic, starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell and Richard Madden, is a bit like Carry on Elton – but it is great fun.

Elton John enters an addiction rehabilitation session, and recounts his life in a flashback, covering his days as young Reginald Dwight growing up in 1950s Britain.

He takes piano lessons, makes his way into the Royal Academy of Music, and hones his craft in local pubs before becoming one of the world's biggest pop stars.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout, 9.00pm, Channel 4

Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie's sixth entry in the action thriller saga, starring Tom Cruise and Henry Cavill, is another fine instalment of this excellent spy action franchise.

Ethan Hunt and the IMF team join forces with CIA assassin August Walker to prevent a disaster caused by mysterious arms dealer John Lark and a group of terrorists known as the Apostles.

Then Hunt and his colleagues are soon pushed to their limits thanks to a face from their past.

Family Flick

Dora and the Lost City of Gold, 6.35pm, RTÉ One

This is a live-action adaptation of the hit animated kids' show, starring Isabela Moner, Eva Longoria and Jeff Wahlberg. And it really works.

Having spent most of her life exploring the jungle with her parents, nothing could prepare Dora for her most dangerous adventure ever - high school.

Dora quickly finds herself leading Boots (her best friend, a monkey), Diego, a mysterious jungle inhabitant and a rag tag group of teens on a live-action adventure to save her parents and solve the mystery of a lost city of gold.

I saw this when it came out in 2019 and loved it. Here’s my review.
