Behind the music - Paddy Goodwin and the Holy Ghosts

Paddy Goodwin

Paddy Goodwin and The Holy Ghosts have released their version of Kate Bush classic, Running Up That Hill. We asked Paddy the BIG questions . . .

Paddy's version of the song was originally recorded back in 2018 Anthony Thistlethwaite on sax and now that the original has had a rebirth thanks to Stranger Things, Anto (who’s back playing with both The Waterboys and The Sawdoctors) persuaded Paddy to release his version.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I went to school with Barry McGuigan, I worked as a horse and carriage driver in New York, I currently play guitar with The Atrix.

How would you describe your music?

Very Varied. From a whisper to a scream . . .

Who are your musical inspirations?

Again, very varied. I used to be an avid reader of the NME back in the day and they used to say that they covered everything from ABBA to Zappa. That about sums up my inspirations.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Horslips in the Hillgrove Hotel in Monaghan circa 1975. I still have the poster!

What was the first record you ever bought?

Hi Hi Hi by Paul McCartney and Wings. This is somewhat ironic as I subsequently produced an album for Henry McCullough, who played guitar on that track and even played drums on the singe's B-side C Moon.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Rally Round The Drum by Archie Roach. I am a big fan of Australian song writer Paul Kelly, who introduced me to the music of Archie who sadly passed last month. It’s quite a riveting song based on Archie’s own experience as a native Aboriginal.

Favourite Lyric of all time?

"The silence of a falling star, Lights up a purple sky, And as I wonder where you are, I’m So Lonesome I could cry" - Hank Williams.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Only One Song? Sham A Ling Ding Dong by Jesse Winchester. He’s one of my favourite song writers and reduced Elvis Costello to tears with this song when he was on Elvis’ TV show a few years ago. A truly wonderful song from a great song writer
