Folk-pop act Doppler have released their new single, It's Your Fault Too. We Jamie Mulrooney and Mick Dempsey of the band the BIG questions . . .
The track features renowned percussionist Raph Dziubinski (Joe Cocker/Average White Band/Simply Red) and Kevin Donnellan (BRÍDÍN/Third Rehearsal) on fiddle.
According to Jamie, It's Your Fault Too "addresses the complexities of relationships. Compassion, forgiveness, tolerance and the desire to seek happiness of the other. It’s very hard to put on genre on it too but if I had to it’d be Alternative Folk with some traditional touches."
The video was filmed by award winning Irish filmmaker Fionn Rogers and features a love triangle like no other featuring two mannequins as lead characters as well as Hardy Bucks’ star Owen Colgan.
"The video parodies several iconic rom-com scenes and hopefully the comedy shines through. It was a nightmare to shoot as the arms and legs kept falling off the mannequins," says Mick.
"We just wanted to enjoy the process of making music videos and this is exactly what we wanted to create."
Tell us three things about yourself?
Jamie: I only started playing music when I was 14 which is late for a musician. I had the hunger then and still do. A Memory, our last single, has been played over 125,000+ times on Spotify and was the most played song on RTÉ Radio 1 for April/May of 2020. I run the largest ukulele programme for kids in the country - Ceili Ukulele is an initiative by Music Generation that brings weekly lessons to over 800 kids!!
Mick: I'm an avid vinyl collector. I enjoy the pilgrimage to all of Ballina local charity shops and I find hidden gems all the time. I support the local music scene in Mayo and try to get to as many local gigs as I can if I'm not performing myself. Doppler are planning to release four singles over the next 12 months and I'm excited to release all this new music and hopefully perform at plenty of festivals next year.
How would you describe your music?
Mick: Right now, we'd be best described as Alternative-Indie-Folk-Pop. I know that's a mouthful but we're constantly changing and wouldn't want to be pigeonholed into any one genre. The album we're working on is a massive mix of genres which will also include funk, country, lounge, bossa nova and rock.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Jamie: One act stands out for us at the moment and that would be the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Me and Mick went to see them twice over the past few weeks (London Stadium and Marley Park). To see John Frusicainte in the flesh again was honestly a dream come true for us both. My first ever live gig was their iconic performance in Slane in 2003. Apart from that the funk group Vulfpeck are massive influences as are Mapache, an Americana/Mexican duo from LA and Arctic Monkeys.
Mick: Stevie Ray Vaughan is the foundation of my musical journey. I idolised him and learned every lick he ever did, and it made me grow as a guitar player. The Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger and anything that Steely Dan produced blew my mind and definitely inspired me as a songwriter.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Jamie: Red Hot Chili Peppers at Slane in 2003 when I was 16 years old.
Mick: Paul McCartney in 2007.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Jamie: Pretty Fly For A White Guy - The Offspring, followed closely by Spiceworld by The Spice Girls.
Mick: A Little Less Conversation - Elvis Presley.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Jamie: White Braids and Pillow Chair - Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Mick: Lonesome LA Cowboy - Mapache.
Favourite lyric of all time?
Jamie: Do You Realize - The Flaming Lips: "Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face? Do you realize we're floating in space? Do you realize that happiness makes you cry? Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die?"
Mick: Reelin' in the Years - Steely Dan: "You been tellin' me you're a genius since you were seventeen, In all the time I've known you, I still don't know what you mean, The weekend at the college didn't turn out like you planned, The things that pass for knowledge, I can't understand."
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Jamie: In The Morning Light - Mapache.
Mick: Aja - Steely Dan.
