Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are reuniting on the big screen for a new sports biopic that will tell the story of Nike's efforts to sign rising basketball star Michael Jordan to the brand in the early 1980s.
US entertainment trade publication the Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, says Affleck will direct the film, a co-write with Damon. Both will also star and serve as producers.
Affleck is set to play Nike co-founder Phil Knight while Damon will play the lead role of former Nike marketing boss Sonny Vaccaro - the man who signed Jordan to the history-making deal.
The film will follow Vaccaro's pursuit of Jordan at a time when Nike was the third most popular shoe company.
"Jordan will be a mythic figure hovering above the movie and never seen, even as Vaccaro tries to reach him by gaining access to those close to him and around him," says the Hollywood Reporter.
Vaccaro's story was previously told as part of the 30 for 30 documentary series in the 2015 ESPN film Sole Man. Jordan was the focus of the ESPN/Netflix documentary series The Last Dance in 2020.
