Stars including Belfast's Caitríona Balfe, Ciarán Hinds, Jude Hill, Jamie Dornan and Kenneth Branagh, as well as Kerry native Jessie Buckley, took to the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles ahead of the 94th Academy Awards.

Ciarán Hinds promised he did not "sell my soul to the devil" in order to land a part in Kenneth Branagh's Belfast.

"I don't know how I deserved it, or why I deserved it. I didn't sell my soul to the devil," he told ABC’s On the Red Carpet.

"But to be honoured by Ken, to ask me to play his grandfather and then to throw Judi Dench (in), the great Dame…it's beyond compare.

"She's a remarkable human being as well as a great actress.

"We had a great time very gently working out our relationship, which ended up with her suffering me while I loved her."

Hinds is nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the film.

Branagh, who has attended the Oscars in person after missing several award ceremonies earlier this week due to testing positive for Covid-19, said it was "beautiful to see a Belfast story speak to the world".

He added he was "delighted" to become nominated in a record-breaking seven categories at this year's awards but "more delighted to be here".

Eleven-year-old Jude Hill promised to be US actress Sofia Carson's date for the night as the pair met on the red carpet.

"I was most looking forward to seeing you actually, I was hoping I would run into you and here we are," the Co Down star said.

The young Belfast star then gave the actress a kiss on the cheek.

Oscars host Wanda Sykes said she would love to see someone "bust their butt" onstage at this year's show.

Speaking to ABC's On the Red Carpet about making jokes with her co-hosts Amy Schumer and Regina Hall, she said: "I want everyone in the room to be comfortable, (to) come there for a good time. It's a celebration.

"If I do say something about someone in the room, it's going to be a little love tap, you know? Not mean. We're just having fun.

"If somebody falls, I'm all over that, that's my thing.

"Watching somebody bust their butt, oh my God - that's the best. I'll put music to it, everything."

Hall says the biggest piece of advice given to her by previous Oscar host Whoopi Goldberg was just "to have fun".

Best Actor nominee Will Smith says the Williams family was "wildly supportive" of his preparation to play their father in King Richard.

"They were wildly supportive and helpful, they were nervous, they wanted it to turn out right," he said.

"This is a beautiful end to a fantastic process.

"He was so misunderstood, we depend so much on the cliche and the stereotype and he was broader than that.

"Their family was doing something that we couldn't even understand from the headlines."

Kirsten Dunst said that she and husband Jesse Plemons feel like they "already won" awards by both being nominated for Oscars this year.

Plemons and Dunst are nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively for their roles in The Power Of The Dog.

"To be nominated together is the craziest thing, we just feel so lucky, we already won you know?" Dunst said.

They revealed that their two sons were in Atlanta, watching the show from a "toddler Oscar party".

Kristen Stewart said she was "slightly hysterically ecstatic" to be at the Oscars for the first time.

The US actress is nominated for best actress for her portrayal of Diana, Princess Of Wales in Spencer.

"I get very nervous in environments such as this…I can't believe I’m even here," she told ABC. "I can’t be nervous, I’m just baffled."

She continued: "I’ve been working since I was nine years old.

"The fact that I’m here tonight for the first time in regard to a film…about one of the nicest people in the world that’s ever lived, it makes sense.

"She’s big, she’s important, she’s nice, she touches people. I’m so happy."

Rachel Zegler said she felt "a lot of pressure" over her presenting duties at the Oscars but that she was "really ready".

The West Side Story star said: "It's my first time and I’m presenting.

"I feel like there’s a lot of pressure but I have practised my presenting face and I have my presenting voice and I am really ready."

The actress revealed she was initially not invited to the 94th annual awards, news that caused outrage on social media.

Aquaman star Jason Momoa said he was "very stoked" to be at this year's Oscars.

He is due to present eight, predominantly craft awards, ahead of the live telecast alongside Dune co-star Josh Brolin.

Momoa said he was excited to reunite with his fellow Dune cast members at the ceremony and would be joined by his daughter and mother.

He wore a suit purchased from London's Savile Row, and completed it with a pocket square in the colours of the Ukrainian flag.

"Glory to Ukraine," he said.

Saniyya Sidney, who stars as tennis great Venus Williams in King Richard, praised her Oscar-nominated co-stars Aunjanue Ellis and Will Smith.

"Aunjanue Ellis is a fierce woman who doesn't take no for an answer, but an incredible actor, a hard worker and someone that's just down to earth and will love you until the last day on earth," she told ABC's On the Red Carpet.

"(And) Mr Will – the biggest kid you will ever meet, and so funny and so kind, and will treat you like family because that is what you become when you spend time with Will Smith."

Ellis and Smith are nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actor Oscars, respectively.

Sidney's co-star Demi Singleton, who plays tennis icon Serena Williams in King Richard, said despite the success of the film her friends and family still saw her as "regular old Demi" and that she still had to do her chores.

"In fact, I feel like more chores have been added on to my plate since King Richard came out," she said.

"Not only my bed and my room and the trash, but I'm doing the dishes as well."

Singleton hinted she had projects lined up for after the Oscars but was unable to give details.
