Michelle Pfeiffer says she gives the past short shrift

French Exit star Michelle Pfeiffer has told RTÉ Entertainment that despite all the acclaimed performances she has given during her career, she is no fan of looking back.

The three-time Oscar nominee has received more plaudits for her role as French Exit's Frances - a socialite who does a midnight flit from New York to France and reflects on her life in the City of Light.

But, offscreen, Pfeiffer doesn't waste time with memories.

"I don't like looking back," she said. "It makes me uncomfortable.

"I don't have movie posters hanging up or awards around or anything - any kind of movie paraphernalia. Nothing. I don't know why I have this, but I've always had this fear of getting stuck in the past."

Pfeiffer added that what drew her to the role of Frances was the way the character approaches the here and now.

"I think the thing that is most riveting for people about her is her take-no-prisoners attitude," she said.

"We spend so much of our time trying to be polite and not hurt people's feelings - and it's exhausting, honestly! I know I try to speak my mind more and not let things bottle up and all of that. She is just 100% herself all the time."

French Exit is in cinemas now.
