John Cena: 'I had to fight for my life against Vin Diesel'

Wrestler and actor John Cena has said that he didn't hold back in his fight scenes with Vin Diesel in the new Fast and Furious movie.

WWE star Cena has joined the action franchise as Dom Toretto’s long-lost brother Jakob and he’s out for revenge after being exiled from the family years earlier - and naturally, the two warring siblings have some pretty epic ding dongs in the latest instalment, F9: The Fast Saga.

Asked if he had to go easy on Vin during their fight scenes, Cena told RTÉ Entertainment, "No. I had to fight for my life. Vin is amazingly strong and I was actually very surprised. I didn’t know what it was going to be like because he is just a giving actor and a giving performer.

"I come from a wrestling universe where you try to make something look punishing, but the goal is for you and your partner to do it 300 nights a year and I thought is that how this movie is going to be? And it’s not! Vin is all in."

Cena, who made his film debut in The Marine in 2006 and has since appeared in well-received Transformers spin-off Bumblebee, is the new boy on a franchise which has earned $5 billion since it began in 2001.

As one of four brothers, he added that he knows all about holding grudges and falling out with his own siblings.

"Well, we’re human beings and I’m 44 years old and I have the regular scope of emotions that humans have, and it includes sadness, bitterness, anger, regret . . . " he says. "And a lot of times unfortunately those are portrayed against the people we hold closest to us.

"Families are tied closest together and I have certainly had my ups and downs with my siblings and my parents but that is a road we all go down in life."
