The Social Network's Andrew Garfield are to star in Under the Banner of Heaven, a murder-mystery inspired by author Jon Krakauer's non-fiction book of the same name.
Normal People's Daisy Edgar-Jones andInto the Wild author Krakauer's 2003 bestseller is described as "a meticulously researched, bone-chilling narrative of polygamy, savage violence and unyielding faith" within Mormon Fundamentalism.
The Hollywood Reporter says the limited series for US streaming service FX on Hulu focuses on "a devout detective whose faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder that seems to be connected to an esteemed Utah family's spiral into LDS [The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints] fundamentalism and their distrust in the government".
Under the Banner of Heaven has Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black (Milk, Big Love) on board as writer-creator with director David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water, Starred Up) behind the lens.
Ozark star Jason Bateman joins Black and Mackenzie as an executive producer through his company, Aggregate Films.
Under the Banner of Heaven's journey to screens began a decade ago with Black originally attached to write a film based on the book.
He said the series had now become a reality "after so many years of work".
"Raised in the LDS faith, my hope is that this true-crime thriller might shed light on the horrific brutalities perpetrated in the name of God in our own backyards," he added.
