Following their split in late 2018, three members of Cavan R&B act The Strypes have formed a new band - the more garage rock orientated The Zen Arcade.
The five-piece have released their debut single, Don't Say A Word. We asked band member Ev the BIG questions . . .
Coming in at two minutes, 30 seconds, the song is an exercise in simplicity, intended to reflect the band's approach to polite conversation. As they say "the song was recorded in response to it being written’.

The Zen Arcade formed in late 2019 and are comprised of three ex-members of The Strypes, whose stellar rise saw them release three critically acclaimed albums and tour the world extensively, with appearances at Glastonbury and Fuji Rocks, while also being feted by Jools Holland and The Arctic Monkeys.
The Zen Arcade likes to do it differently and birthed a podcast series and multiple fanzines before making a record. Don’t Say a Word is their short sharp invigorating calling card.
Tell us three things about yourself?
How would you describe your music?
Fast, fuzzy and melodic.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Hoodoo Gurus, Sugar, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Long Ryders, Teenage Fanclub, The New Pornographers, The Damned, and The Flying Burrito Brothers to name but many!
How did you occupy yourself during the coronavirus lockdown?
We tried to keep as busy as possible, kept up online publication of our zine and hosted two special interactive episodes of our podcast over Zoom where we got fans of the band to join in and contribute to all the different sections we devised. People from all over the world got involved and it wound up being a great way to get together and have the craic in the current climate. We’re also fortunate enough to live very close to our recording studio of choice so when the restrictions eased during the summer we spent loads of time in there recording for future releases.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Leather Together by The Lemon Twigs, two brothers from America who are complete musical geniuses, it's a track from their latest album which came out in August and is brilliant!
Favourite lyric of all time?
'Meet the new boss, same as the old boss’ - Won’t Get Fooled Again by The Who.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?
Ball Park Incident by Wizzard.
