Coronation Street has shared the news that Weatherfield icons William Roache and Barbara Knox are back on set as Ken and Rita, filming for the soap's 60th anniversary.

On Thursday, the show tweeted: "Here's some good news to put a smile on your faces! Coronation Street legends William Roache and Barbara Knox are back filming on the cobbles this week! Who's excited to see their return ahead of our 60th Anniversary celebrations?"

Lynchpins Roache, aged 88, and Knox, 87, have not been on screen since Corrie returned under social distancing protocols - but fans can now look forward to seeing them in the 60th anniversary episodes in December.

Their co-star Sally Dynevor, who plays Sally, has promised viewers a "really lovely community story".

"Brilliantly, we're starting filming now for the 60th anniversary, and it's great because it's a community story. So, everyone's involved, which is perfect for Coronation Street," she told Lorraine Kelly on ITV's Lorraine on Tuesday.

"We're all coming together and it is a really lovely community story. We started [filming] this week, so that'll be out on December the ninth, which is really exciting."

Coronation Street airs on Virgin Media One and ITV1 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
