Outlander star Caitriona Balfe is planning to bring Irish author Sarah Crossan's new book Here Is the Beehive to the screen, having secured the rights to the just-published novel.

Billed as a "shattering and compulsive novel about transgression and desire, secrecy and loss", Here Is the Beehive centres on an affair and its aftermath.

In a statement, Balfe said she was "beyond thrilled" to collaborate with Crossan on the planned film.

"I was particularly drawn to her portrayal of a flawed, complex and wounded woman, navigating a tragic circumstance somewhat of her own creation," Balfe added.

Writer Crossan said Balfe's "vision is ambitious and daring as well as sensitive to the original text".

"I am excited to be working with her and her team over the coming months and years," she added.

US entertainment website Deadline says it has been told by sources that the adaptation is intended as a "starring vehicle" for Balfe, timing and schedule permitting.
