The much loved series, Derry Girls, will start filming in April and according to Tommy Tiernan, the third series will be the last.

Speaking to the The Jason Manford Show on Absolute Radio in the UK Tiernan who plays Gerry said: "This is last series, I think. As far as I know this is the very last series."

Tiernan who plays Erin's dad told the radio show that he finds it most difficult to work with Kathy Kiera Clarke, who plays his sister in law, saying: "Kathy is one of the funniest people that I've ever worked with and I’m just not able to look at her."

He said: "I feel lucky to be working with such funny people." "It’s enough to bring you out in sweats." He also said that he:"finds it impossible to look at Orla who plays his niece-in-law daughter."

Tommy Tiernan, who plays Erin’s beaten done dad by his father in law said that "as soon as I get the scripts I will rifle through it, first of all to see my own scenes and then to pray to God that I don’t have an awful lot of scenes with [Kathy], because I’ll be getting the sweats the night before."

Last year writer Lisa McGee said she is thrilled her band of "eejits" would continue their on-screen adventures after Channel 4 confirmed the show will return for a third series.

McGee, who used her own childhood as the basis for the show, said: "I love writing this show and I'm so thrilled to be able to continue the Derry Girls story, thank you Channel 4, Erin and the eejits live to fight another day!"

Channel 4's director of programmes Ian Katz said: "At a time of great uncertainty about the future of the country thank God we have one unequivocally good piece of news to look forward to: the Derry Girls will be back to make our lives a bit brighter and more fun."

Head of comedy at the channel Fiona McDermott said: "It's no surprise that Derry Girls continues to delight a growing legion of fans - a combination of magical writing and adorable characters make this show both timely and timeless.

"We're delighted to confirm a third series - don't tell Ma Mary, but I'm breaking open the Christmas cupboard in celebration."
