Renée Zellweger and Joaquin Phoenix boosted their Oscar chances considerably after their wins at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

The awards are seen as an indicator of Oscar success in the acting categories. The Academy Awards take place in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 9.

Zellweger was named Best Actress in a Motion Picture at the SAG Awards for her performance in Judy Garland biopic Judy, with Phoenix winning Best Actor for his work in the supervillain origins story Joker. Both actors won Golden Globes earlier this month for their performances.

In his acceptance speech, Phoenix paid tribute to the late Heath Ledger, who portrayed The Joker in 2008's The Dark Knight.

The award for Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture went to the stars of the South Korean black comedy Parasite - the first foreign-language film to win the award.

In the film categories, Best Supporting Actress went to Laura Dern for her performance in Marriage Story, with Brad Pitt named Best Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.

In the television categories, the stars of The Crown celebrated winning Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, with the cast of The Marvellous Mrs Maisel winning the Comedy award.

The Morning Show's Jennifer Aniston and Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage were the winners of the Drama actor awards. Aniston, who previously won a SAG award as part of the cast of Friends, savoured her first individual win.

It was also Dinklage's first individual win. He previously won as part of the cast of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel's Tony Shalhoub won the Comedy actor awards.

In the Television Movie or Limited Series categories, there were wins for Fosse/Verdon stars Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams.

Robert De Niro was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are on RTÉ2 and the RTÉ Player tonight at 9:00pm.
