Elizabeth Banks reckons "good sized roles in film and television" should be offered to women of all ages.
The 45-year-old, who directs, stars and takes on writing duties in the reboot of the classic 1970s TV show, said she wanted to update the classic story for a modern audience, while highlighting the need for women over forty to land leading roles.
Speaking to RTÉ Entertainment, Banks said:"I felt like we could really honour everything that came before it and embrace it and bring it into 2019. For me, it was like a challenge that I thought was a really fun one, and something that we could update."
Banks, who made her directorial feature film debut with Pitch Perfect 2 in 2015, plays Bosley, a former Angel who became one of Charlie's assistants.

When asked why she chose to make herself a former Angel in the movie, The Hunger Games actress said she wanted to highlight how Angels aren't disposed of when they hit a certain age.
"It was really that I wanted to make sure that the audience knew that one of the tenants of Charlie's Angels was that when you turn forty we don't throw you away, that we honour the experience that you’ve had, and that you can bring something else to the job even though you may not be a field agent anymore."
"It’s so interesting because that’s something that I feel like in men’s movies no one thinks about, but we actually have to make an effort to give women over forty good sized roles in film and television," she explained.
"I just wanted to make sure that’s what we were doing."
