EastEnders has left viewers reeling with its weekend cliffhanger, telling fans that "some lives hang in the balance" after Friday night's hostage crisis in Walford.

Warning: spoiler alert!

Viewers saw Hunter holding the residents of Albert Square at gunpoint in the Queen Vic after Ben was shot in the melee.

As the BBC soap cranked up the tension, Hunter became increasingly agitated, leaving the Queen Vic with the pregnant Louise as his hostage.

Surrounded by police in Albert Square, Hunter was urged to drop his gun.

But when Keanu broke through the police cordon, Hunter shot him and was in turn shot by police.

Louise then ran to help Keanu while Hunter's mother Mel cradled her son in her arms.

"Some lives hang in the balance. Some are gone forever," EastEnders tweeted after the closing scene.

Fans will have to wait until Monday night on RTÉ One and BBC One for the aftermath episode.

EastEnders airs on RTÉ One and BBC One on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
