Megadeth star Dave Mustaine has reached out to "the best fans in the world" and thanked them for their support after he was diagnosed with throat cancer.

The band's guitarist and vocalist revealed last week that he had already started treatment for the disease and said they had to cancel most of their remaining shows for 2019.

The 57-year-old rocker has now taken to Twitter to share an update.

He posted in a video in which he said: "Hi, I wanted to take a moment real quick and thank my family, my friends and the best fans in the world for all of your support and love over the last few days.

"We're gonna beat this thing together."

Following Mustaine's diagnosis, the US trash metal act cancelled most of their remaining shows for 2019.

The band will now only play October’s Megacruise, a three-day festival on a cruise liner with a line-up that also features Anthrax and Testament.

Mustaine and his band mates Kiko Loureiro, David Ellefson and Dirk Verbeuren are continuing to work on their follow-up to the successful album, Dystopia, the title track of which won a Grammy for best metal performance in 2017.

Mustaine founded Megadeth in 1983 after he was kicked out of Metallica.
