It has been announced that Coronation Street star Lucy Fallon, who has played Bethany Platt since 2015, will be leaving the soap next year, with fans promised "a brilliant final chapter".

The Sun Online, which broke the story, says Fallon wants to pursue other roles. During her time in Weatherfield, 23-year-old Fallon was at the centre of the show's controversial grooming storyline, winning a National Television Award and Inside Soap and British Soap awards for her performance.

Bethany's grooming storyline was one of the most controversial in Coronation Street history

In a social media post after the story broke, Fallon said that she would have liked to announce her departure in her own time.

Describing her decision as "extremely difficult," Fallon paid tribute to the cast and crew, and "immensely important storylines" she had been a part of.

She concluded by saying she couldn't wait "to see what's in store for Bethany this year".

"Lucy advised us at the start of this year that she would like to leave at the end of her current contract in 2020 to pursue other projects," Coronation Street producer Iain Macleod told The Sun Online.

"She is an amazing performer and has been at the centre of some huge stories for us during her time on the show. I have no doubt that her stellar career will continue beyond the cobbles and would like to wish her all the best in whatever she does next - starting with the brilliant final chapter of Bethany's story!"

A source added: "Lucy's been in Corrie just under five years and feels now is the right time to try new things. Everything is amicable and there isn't any anger there. Bosses are keen to leave the role of Bethany open in case Lucy does want to return in the future."

The announcement of Fallon's departure follows the news that co-stars Faye Brookes (Kate Connor) and Tristan Gemmill (Robert Preston) would also be leaving the soap.
