Coronation Street star Faye Brookes, who has played Kate Connor since 2015, has announced she is leaving the ITV soap for "pastures new".

Brookes was at the centre of one of Coronation Street's big romantic storylines when viewers saw her character fall in love with Rana Habeeb (played by Bhavna Limbachia), with the couple nicknamed 'Kana' by fans.

Brookes' departure as Kate from the soap follows the killing off of Rana on the screen couple's wedding day in March.

Corrie's Kate and Rana storyline was one of the big tearjerkers of 2019

Writing on social media, Brookes said: "Thanks to everyone for your amazing support, but after 4 fabulous years in Weatherfield it's time for me to explore new opportunities."

"I've loved playing Kate Connor, but she needs a break for a little while and so with a song in my heart I'm off to pastures new. #kana #corrie," she added.

At the weekend it was announced that Brookes' Coronation Street co-star Tristan Gemmill was also leaving the show after four years playing Robert Preston.
