Making his first English language feature, the film was made by Finnish director Dome Karukoski and features Kill Your Friends star Nicholas Hoult in the lead role, Lily Collins as Tolkien’s wife Edith Bratt, and Colm Meaney as Father Francis Morgan, who was a key figure in the young Tolkien's life.

The cast also includes Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Genevieve O’Reilly, Pam Ferris and Derek Jacobi.

Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a fellow group of outcasts at school.

This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the "fellowship" apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle Earth novels.

Tolkien is in cinemas on May 3.
