Rami Malek has joked that footage of Nicole Kidman appearing to blank him onstage at the Golden Globes is "haunting him on the Internet".

Previously best known for his central role on TV drama Mr Robot, the 37-year-old won the Golden Globe for best actor in a drama for his role as Queen front man Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.

During Sunday night's ceremony in Los Angeles, the film was awarded the Best Motion Picture - Drama prize, which was presented by Nicole Kidman.

Malek came back onstage to celebrate with the film’s producers, and was filmed waving at Kidman. She didn’t see him and turned to walk away, so he puts an arm around her waist but seems to get no response - though she did later smile at him as the producers gave their speeches.

Malek was shown the viral clip during an appearance on Tuesday night's Jimmy Kimmel Live! on US TV and he appeared to find the funny side of what looked like a rather embarrassing moment.

"I had not seen that!" he said, after lifting his face from his hands. "I’ve known her for many years, despite [what] it may seem from that video, so I thought I could easily go up and say hi but in a moment like that it was . . . very awkward.

He added: "I have a feeling this is probably haunting me on the Internet."

Jimmy Kimmel agreed: "This is going to be around for a little while."
