Chris O'Dowd has said he "may have had a couple too many" when he made his appearance on Channel 4's The Last Leg on Friday night.

The actor was in high spirits - and trending - during his time on The Last Leg sofa.

He later posted a clip of 'cheese tea' on Twitter on Saturday night with the caption: "I may have had a couple too many of these last night."

"How did you end up that smashed on telly?" asked one of O'Dowd's Twitter followers. "Green room got out of hand, or you forgot you were on, went to the pub, then remembered you had to be on channel 4 so showed up to style it out? Not judging, just curious. You were gas and sure it happens to the best of us."

"I'm genuinely not sure," O'Dowd replied. "Didn't feel like a [sic] drank a bunch, but I went to the studio from the gym and skipped dinner. Unwise, in retrospect."

Many of his fans were quick to rally around the Get Shorty star and offer their support, but after one asked if O'Dowd fancied a night out, he replied: "Never again."

When one Twitter follower wrote that it was "rather embarrassing" and "distasteful" for people to be laughing on the night, O'Dowd said: "I am a little embarrassed to be honest. But to keep things in perspective, it's a tipsy comedian on a late night chat show on Channel 4. I wasn't doing meth on bbc breakfast. But thanks for your concern, genuinely."

O'Dowd will next be seen on the big screen in the romantic comedy-drama Juliet, Naked. It opens in cinemas on November 2.
