Singer Liam Payne has said that announcing the news of his split with Cheryl was "like breaking up twice" and he is feeling "a bit fragile".

The One Direction star made his comments while appearing on UK radio show the Official Vodafone Big Top 40 to promote his debut solo EP, First Time.

"I'm feeling OK," said Payne. "I'm a bit fragile at times. No, I'm alright you know. It's been OK."

Payne and Cheryl have a toddler son, Bear, with Payne admitting there is "a lot of stuff I've still got to sort out with my life".

On the emotional toll of announcing the split, Payne said: "We already did this once and now I'm having to go through all of that again." 

"It's difficult," he continued. 

"People need to remember that behind all those statements there are actually people who are going through the same sort of stuff that you go through, whether they're famous, rich or whatever they are."
