Presenter and fashion designer Brendan Courtney told RTÉ Entertainment he was proud to walk the IFTA red carpet with his family and for his documentary on his late father Frank to be nominated for an award.

The 44-year-old star received an overwhelming reaction to his touching and poignant documentary We Need to Talk About Dad, which looked at the family's struggle to provide the best care for their father following his stroke. One of the topics addressed was the lack of options for State-subsidised home care.

Speaking on the red carpet of Thursday's IFTAs, Courtney said he and his family are very proud of their documentary being nominated for an award, and said it is "a profound and amazing tribute to him".

"I'm very emotional tonight because dad is a year gone next Thursday and we're actually collecting his ashes. To be nominated for the documentary feels like such a profound and amazing tribute to him. We're here as a family and we're very proud."

Courtney said he didn't mind opening up his personal life to the camera but says it was tough on his loved ones.

"When you are going through it, you're living it, and putting a camera on it is just an extra thing that's really no pressure, if that's what you work at. But it was pressurising for the family.

"I suppose everybody felt that they should really make a change and try and make a difference."

"Dad really didn't like this kind of thing at all, he'd be kind of cringing away from it, but the last year of his life he decided to use that to hopefully make the transition into care a little easier for other people. He was very noble and we are very proud," he added.
