French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi has hit back at Roseanne Barr's claims that a sleeping pill was behind her Twitter outburst.

The US sitcom star recently blamed her post, which attacked former Obama White House adviser Valerie Jarrett, on medication she had taken.

Barr's allegations prompted the drug company to retort to her comment and they stated that racism was not a side effect of its drugs.

"People of all races, religions and nationalities work at Sanofi every day to improve the lives of people around the world," the drug maker tweeted.

"While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication."

Barr has returned to Twitter following the online outrage about a racist tweet which the TV star herself described as "unforgiveable" (sic), and has vowed to "defend myself as well as talk to my followers".

Barr's tweet saw US network ABC cancelling her revived sitcom and re-runs being pulled from the schedules.

The 65-year-old actress apologised to Jarrett and said she was leaving Twitter but later returned, writing: "I'm sorry 4 my tweet, AND I will also defend myself as well as talk to my followers. so, go away if u don't like it. I will handle my sadness the way I want to. I'm tired of being attacked & belittled more than other comedians who have said worse."

She continued: "Please don't start all of that boycott abc stuff - I'm not a censor and they have the right to do what they wish. It' all ok. thanks tho guys!"

Barr had earlier written that she had done something "unforgiveable" and "indefensible" and asked her followers not to defend her.

She also said she had taken sleeping pills before writing the tweet.

"Not giving excuses for what I did(tweeted) but I've done weird stuff while on ambien-cracked eggs on the wall at 2am etc," she wrote.

The 65-year-old is due to appear on the Joe Rogan podcast in the US on Friday.
