Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig has said that she would like to see her hometown of Sacramento used in further films that she hopes to make.

Gerwig has been inspired in her ambition to concentrate on the Californian city by author Elena Ferrante, who four best known novels are all set in and around Naples.

"I would like to do a quartet of Sacramento films," the director said on an A24 podcast, as reported by Vanity Fair. "She (Ferrante) wrote these four books that took place mainly in Naples. They’re so great and I thought, ‘Oh, I’d like to do that.’"

Her most recent movie, the hugely successful Lady Bird, which starred Saoirse Ronan - the director rates the actress highly - explored just one facet of Gerwig’s hometown. "But there’s still lots of different parts of Sacramento that I’d like to explore, too. I feel like I have the privilege of being from a place, and I’m really from that place.

"My family’s still there, and my friends are still there. I feel like I can actually speak to it with some feeling."
