Oscar winning director Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that he and wife of 30 years Lorenza Newton have seperated.

Del Toro was answering questions regarding his personal life after attending last week’s Academy Awards with friend and screenwriter Kim Morgan.

The director, who picked up the awards for Best Picture and Best Director for The Shape of Water, confirmed he seperated from Newton in February of last year.

"I separated in February [2017] and I got divorced in September, but few people knew," he told Mexican newspaper Reforma.

Del Toro said he had avoided commenting publicly about his split in order to avoid gossip, and added that he was collaborating with Morgan on a new project.

The pair met and started working together at the end of last summer, several months after the separation from Newton.

Del Toro and Newton have two daughters together.

On winning his first Best Director Oscar last weekend, Del Toro said: "I am an immigrant. The best thing our industry does is to help erase the lines in the sand when the world tries to make them deeper."

He added on winning Best Picture: "Growing up in Mexico, I thought this could never happen. It happens.

"And I want to tell you, everyone who is dreaming of a parable of using genre fantasy to tell the things that are real in the world today, you can do this.

"This is a door. Kick it open and come in."
