The first trailer for the Irish prison drama Michael Inside has been released, ahead of the award-winning film opening in cinemas next month.

Written and directed by Frank Berry (I Used to Live Here, Ballymun Lullaby), Michael Inside will be one of the most-discussed homegrown films of 2018.

It tells the story of a naive teenager (Dafhyd Flynn) who is sentenced to three months in prison.

As Michael's grandfather (Lalor Roddy) tries to do his best to help him, the young man comes under the influence of a volatile fellow prisoner (Moe Dunford).

Speaking to RTE Entertainment last summer at a cast and crew screening of Michael Inside, Vikings star Dunford hailed Flynn as "one of the finest actors I've ever worked with".

"Daf and Frank have a trust and there's a taut line there that's something special," he said.

"Daf didn't know what scenes were coming day to day, so he was learning lines just before each scene to keep it fresh. I thought it was a very brave choice. I thought it kept it very real."

Michael Inside was named Best Feature at the Irish Film and Television Drama Awards last month. It previously won Best Irish Film at the Galway Film Fleadh and the Audience Award at the Cork International Film Festival.

It opens in cinemas on Friday April 6.
